California Dreamin’ in NYC
A California family was in search of a NYC home base for their extended stays in the city—which led to this incredible renovation. They needed a large home for their big family, one with four bedrooms, four baths, and an open, accommodating design that would suit busy life with their three teens.
During this complete overhaul, I worked with an architect to reimagine two adjacent apartments as one larger family home. The challenge was to create a truly open concept reminiscent of California living—not easy in NYC. The home needed to offer one large, gracious space for the family to gather—one with earthiness and warmth, one they would love as much as their California home.
Room by room, we completed the transformation with personal touches and contemporary style that suited the family’s personality. The result was a comfortable, inviting home where everyone could be together, hang out, and have fun being a family in the Big Apple.

The custom chandelier in the dining area is made of delicate agate beads set inside an oil rubbed bronze frame. An interesting mix.

The chef’s kitchen is outfitted with commercial appliances and stainless steel open shelving. The glass tile backsplash rises from the countertop and extends to the ceiling for dramatic effect.

What a luxury to have a window in a Manhattan kitchen! Robin took the opportunity to create a niche above the sink and installed a hand-blown glass light fixture to elevate the look.

Bar seating was added to the open counter in the kitchen to allow connection with guests while cooking. The double-sided glass cabinets keep light flowing through the space.

A little bit of zen goes a long way. This side table in the living room displays a simple vase filled with tall greenery surrounded by tranquil decorative accessories.

Robin likes to make a foyer feel welcoming and important. The ceilings in this apartment created a challenge, as they are relatively low. To work with the lower ceiling, she chose a large shade-within-a-shade drum light fixture that adds drama to the space. Another challenge was the lack of room for an entry table. Robin found this sculptural piece that combines form and function.
